Embracing the Initial Connection

I met my mentor - Dr. Deborah Atobrah during my time as an MPhil student at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, in 2013. She thought me two courses namely, Culture and Gender in African Societies and Gender and Development. I enjoyed every bit of her teaching. At this point, I felt there was ‘something’ in her that I was connected to. I liked the way she was friendly and at the same time very passionate about her work.

Embracing the Opportunity

Right after the first semester into the MPhil program, she asked me if I wanted to be her Graduate Assistant during my second year. The announcement of this opportunity both stunned and excited me at the same time since I had not even completed my first year of the program. Without a doubt, I knew she had seen something great in me. I accepted the offer and truly enjoyed every bit of my work as a Graduate Assistant under her.

Embracing the Mentor’s Impact

Fast forward, Dr. Atobrah became my supervisor for my master’s thesis. With her guidance and support, I completed an excellent thesis ahead of time in 2015. She helped me to develop excellent research and academic writing skills. Through her guidance, I later got the opportunity to start my Ph.D. at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) at the University of Ghana. Over the years, we have done conference presentations together. My relationship with Dr. Atobrah now extends from academics to family. She has been my personal guide, counsellor and a mother.

Embracing Growth with Gratitude

It is great to have someone who believes in you … who pushes you to unimaginable heights. I bless God for Dr. Deborah Atobrah' s life. I take her guidance and directions as a personal prophecy. Indeed, God works through people and great mentors like these are like guardian angels.

Embracing the advice

Great work Patience. I know you are also impacting lives with the knowledge and experience you have acquired so far. In our own small ways we can change the world for the better. Cheers.
