Mentee Spotlight - EQUiP 2024: Aime Ishimwe

"A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself."

Oprah Winfrey

BACKGROUND

My name is Aime Ishimwe. I was born and raised in the rural area of Musanze, Rwanda. I am 21 years old. My life has been deeply shaped by the values of hard work, community, and education instilled by my heroic single mother. I grew up in a friendly family with three siblings, in a supportive community that appreciated mutual care and resilience. Despite my family’s low financial status, I was determined to excel academically and make a difference. I am currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree in General Medicine and Surgery at the University of Rwanda.

Having met generous people and organizations who shaped my life and helped me to realize my potential, I found myself deeply rooted in giving back to my community. I am a passionate community volunteer, who has participated in different initiatives to promote the health, well-being, and quality education of people in my community.

INTERESTS AND CAREER GOALS

I thrive on staying busy and engaged in activities that align with my purpose of serving society. I am deeply committed to revolutionizing healthcare through innovative medical practices. My ultimate goal is to leverage my medical knowledge and skills to enhance healthcare access and outcomes, benefiting both the medical community and my society at large.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I am a dedicated community volunteer, focused on empowering underprivileged children with quality education. I firmly believe in the transformative power of education and compassion, and I am devoted to making a positive impact in the lives of others.

MENTORSHIP

I first experienced mentorship in upper secondary school when I received a full scholarship to continue my studies. This opportunity exposed me to the power and benefits of having mentors. Life presents its obstacles, and having people around to guide you through this journey is immensely rewarding. My mentor always told me that true joy and accomplishment come from transforming someone else's life.

I am actively involved in teaching English and mentoring others. I co-founded the Songa Scholars Foundation, a student-led organization dedicated to helping brilliant kids from poor families improve their English and providing them with mentorship. Through this foundation, I am positively impacting many young lives, helping them realize their potential and live purposeful lives.

The benefits of having a mentor ignited my journey of becoming a mentor to others. Among the initiatives I undertake is a mentorship series, helping the younger generation realize their potential and discover the precious gold within themselves.

LEADERSHIP

I used to dislike taking responsibility because I believed that leadership was meant for young adults, and not for people of my age when I was younger. However, in my class, I often found myself leading group projects and assignments, even though I avoided taking on major responsibilities.

My perspective changed after I learned more about leadership. I realized that being a leader isn't just about holding a formal position; it's about inspiring and guiding others to achieve shared goals.

After graduating from high school, I led my fellow graduates in a 4-month volunteer project in our sector, which proved to be incredibly fulfilling. My leadership journey didn't end there. In May 2024, I completed the Aspire Leaders program, taught by faculty from Harvard Business School. I continue to develop my leadership skills, aiming to create a healthier and safer society

IMPACT AND LEGACY

Despite being a student, my work and dedication are already making a significant positive impact in the community. My efforts in health education have raised awareness about preventive measures and healthier lifestyles. Through the Songa Scholars Foundation, I have contributed to educational and personal development, helping talented children from disadvantaged backgrounds. After completing my education, I hope to continue this work on a larger scale.

WHY EQUiP.

I was blessed to meet mentors at a young age, and I have experienced the benefits of having a mentor. This motivated me to apply for the MeetMentors’ EQUiP program. So far, I have been aided in realizing my potential, becoming a better version of myself, and improving the way I carry out my existing initiatives while also equipping myself with new skills. I have also gotten to meet like-minded individuals with whom I have started building meaningful connections. I count it a blessing to have been selected for MeetMentors’ EQUiP 2024.
